The Kominsky Method | Netflix | Brilliant, thought provoking, well made comedy for adults.

Some friendships never get old, says the tagline and that is precisely what 'The Kominsky Method' is all about. Michael Douglas and Alan Arkin star in this story about a couple of senior citizens who are at an uncompromising crossroad that life threw at them at an age that can be considered to be 'old'. The friendship is beautiful, thought provoking and at the same time funny to the core. Just goes to remind that life is a thousand times easier if you have a funny bone in you irrespective of the situation you are in. I loved watching the series and am eagerly waiting for the season 2.

Bodyguard | Netflix | Another fantastic edge of the seat, British Thriller with an odd ending.

It has been a while since a quality British thriller hit the small screen and the trailer of Bodyguard (2018) suggested that the wait might go on for a little longer. Bodyguard, starring Richard Madden (David Budd) and Keeley Hawes (Home Secretary Julia Montague) was griping from the word go. A fantastic opening episode introduces us to the Special Protection Office David Budd, through a tense, brilliantly acted out sequence of a terror attempt in a train. The traumatized war veteran is assigned the duty of Special Protection Officer of the highly volatile, yet motivated Home Secretary Julia Montague whose controversial comments earn her both high praise as well as powerful enemies. The acting by all the supporting cast including, but not limited to Sophie Rundle, Ash Tandon, Nina T...

The Haunting of Hill House | Netflix | When the genre is Horror, this is the closest to perfection one can ever get.

I wouldn't call myself a sucker for the genre 'horror', nor am I usually inclined to get started on a series if its anything but a thriller. The trailer was interesting yet it was not that enticing. This is why The Haunting of Hill House (A Netflix Original) haunted and thrilled me in so many levels. Every aspect of the series, from the writing, cast, background music, cinematography, sets and story are off the charts and is oozing with class. Without doubt the series turned out to be one of the best Horror series I ever saw. From the moment the series kicked off, Mike Flanagan lets us dissect and judge the lives of 7 individuals through an elaborate mixture of moments from the past and present, all leading to the Hill House. The series keeps alternating between the two timelines su...

11.22.63 | Hulu Original | A mystery Sci-Fi Thriller that starts off brilliantly, eases off a bit and then ends with a bang !

Jake Epping (James Franco ) is a high school teacher who travels back in time to 1960, through a time portal that was revealed to him by his friend and cafe owner Al Templeton. The time portal located in Al's Cafe closet lets them travel back to October 21'st 1960 every single time and however long they stay back in the past, its always just 2 minutes that elapses in the present. After multiple failed attempts and now dying of cancer, Al requests Jake to travel back in time so that he could prevent the JFK assassination (as he believes if JFK had survived, the world would have been a better place) by taking out Lee Harvey Oswald (Daniel Webber) and finding out if anybody else was involved in the same. Reluctantly and with nothing to lose in his present life, Jake sets out ...

Netflix Original | The Forest | La forêt | A french thriller circled around a beautiful village.

When a 16 year old school student Jennifer goes missing, Captain Gasper Decker (Samuel Labarthe) and  his team goes about investigating. All that they have as lead is the phone call received by the ever mysterious french teacher Eva Mendel (Alexia Barlier) right before the girls disappearance.  The series is entirely in french, but was riveting enough for me to ignore that fact.  It comes with the usual share of mystery, lies and thrill.  The 6 episode series starts pretty strongly with the first two episodes moving the story along at a brisk pace. All the characters are introduced and some of the prime suspects are introduced and nullified in quick succession. The story takes a turn when the missing child ends up dead and that is followed by two more girls going missing. The story,...

Safe | Netflix Original | Harlan Coben played it safe on this one.

If The Five , Sherlock and Dexter did not intrigue you enough to give it a go at the new  Netflix Original Safe , i doubt anything would. Harlan Coben's Safe sticks to the generic formula that worked so well in The Five and is a pretty interesting watch. It, however, does not follow the upward trajectory in terms of entertainment factor as in the case of 'the five'.  Safe is set in a suburban British gated community where all the main characters of the story live.  The story gets rolling when a girl goes missing from the community. In typical Coben style there are a few other characters, all with their own share of secrets that form the crux of the story. In the end everything is connected, some less convincingly than others. After a brief hiatus, Michael C. Hall returns as the m...

Money Heist | La casa de papel | Netflix | A classic thriller with more oomph than dud moments.

Money Heist came in as a highly recommended series , by many of my friends and it did not disappoint. Its an 'almost masterpiece' which at times failed to keep up with the dizzying plot build up that it had over the first few episodes. It's about a group of robbers spearheaded by the meticulous mastermind 'El Profesor' (Álvaro Morte) who plans to rob the 'The Royal Mint' by printing 2.4 billion Euros and thereby accomplishing the biggest heist ever ! Like most of the heist stories of our times, the group is carefully assembled together from scratch by the brain of the whole operation and here its the Professor. He teaches and prepares the team of robbers for 6 months so that they can pull off the perfect heist and go by their chosen city names. Thus, the calm and composed  Berlín (P...

Lilyhammer | Netflix Original | As Good as a Comedy-Crime Drama could get !

Lilyhammer is a fabulous binge-worthy comedy/crime series that popped up in my Netflix feed out of the blue. It starts with the New York mobster and second-in-command,   Frank Tagliano (Steven Van Zandt) getting in line of the cross-hair, when the chief dies and the brother takes over the Mafia. Frank's dog gets killed and he escapes by the skin of his teeth and before going all John Wick on the perpetrators he decides to do the sensible thing and turn States witness. In return he gets to choose any new identity anywhere in the world. However, he chose to go to Lilyhammer, Norway, as he loved the place when he saw the 94 Winter Olympics on TV and thus begins the adventure.  Lilyhammer is more of a Norwegian production than an American one and it turns out to be a dark comedy version...

Parks and Recreation | Netflix | One of the best modern Sitcoms

I was probably very late to the party when I had started watching Parks and Recreation . A failed attempt at 'The Office' and 'Arrested Development' meant that I had almost lost faith on there being another binge-worthy sitcom among the modern day contenders. It was without much of an expectation that I started watching Parks and Rec and the low expectations probably went a long way in me ending up liking the series. Parks and Rec is centered around the very ambitious Leslie Knope (Amy Poehler) who is a Deputy Director at The Parks and Recreation in a small town, Pawnee, Indiana and her colleagues. The series stars at a very slow pace with the introduction to characters taking its own sweet time. Leslie, is a hard-working, passionate, self-driven lady who wants to help everyone around h...

Broadchurch | Netflix | Yet another reason why British shows are leaps and bounds above the rest.

Broadchurch , is a British crime-drama thriller based on a small coastal town by the same name. I just got done with the first season and it has been nothing short of outstanding till now. The story begins when a young boy is found dead at the beach and investigation begins on what transpired on the night of the death. A new DI, Alec Hardy (David Tennant) heads the investigation along with DS Ellie Miller (Olivia Colman) as the story unfolds on the lives and lies of the closely knit Broadchurch community. It's not often you get a crime-drama which shows in proper depth how a family and community deals with the death of a close one.  Olivia Colman does a wonderful job in the role of DS Ellie Miller, the detective in charge of the murder investigation of Danny Latimer, the kid who get...
